About

Otniel Tasman

My name is Otniel Tasman, a young choreographer, performing artist, and dance festival producer indigenous to the Banyumas region of Central Java, Indonesia.

Over the course of 10 years, I have been exploring gender conflict as a practitioner of the traditional Banyumas Lengger dance, commonly understood as a "cross-gender" ritual dance performed by male dancers in female dress. Lengger encapsulates our indigenous symbols of fertility, spirituality, and cosmology, including the spiritually embodied concept called β€œnyawiji”, meaning β€œwhen two become one”, and this is the foundation of my creative process.

Through my creation journey within which I have developed contemporary performances, made dance films, produced a Lengger festival, and written a book about Lengger, I have received new values resulting from the exploration process, not only regarding the forms of the artworks, but also through my thought process, academic knowledge, and collisions with other forms of media.

Lengger is unique because it is danced by men wearing female costumes and make-up, and the dancers are commonly known as Lengger Lanang (male Lengger). To become a Lengger, one has to equip oneself with traditional Lengger art skills and also practice spirituality in the Lengger cosmology. To this day, I continue to explore Lengger-based ideas and contemporary choreography for my work.Β

My work includes Mantra (2012), Barangan (2013), Lengger Laut (2014), Penantian Dariah (2015), Lengger Metal (2016), Nosheheorit (2017), Cablaka (2018), Entrance (2019), Amongster: Voyage of Lengger (2020), Nyawiji (2021), O-Excelsior (2022) and Exit πŸ˜‚ (2023).Β

I completed my Master of Arts education at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Surakarta (2021). I also founded Otniel Dance Community (2012) also Seblaka Sesutane (2016) and have worked on several collaborative works with national and international artists, such as Ming Wong (Germany), Daniel Kok (Singapore), Arco Renz (Germany), Maxine Heppner (Canada), Hanafi Muhammad (Indonesia), Suprapto Suryodarmo (Indonesia) and Garin Nugroho (Indonesia).

I was also involved in one of the EMPAC programs, an artist's speech to present my choreographic practice and perspective within the framework of the theme "Performing Waria: Genre as Technology for Shaping Trans-Identity in Indonesia" in January 2021 at New York, Colombia University. In addition, I am involved in the Rotten TV art project in collaboration between Jupiter Artland (UK), CEMETI - Institute for Art and Society (Indonesia), and Casa do Povo (Brazil), coordinated by Daniel Lie (Artist; Brasil-Indonesia-Germany) and supported by the British Council, collaboration with Ahn Eun me Company (Seoul) 2022 and held the 2022 Jagad Lengger Festival in my hometown, Banyumas on 8 November 2022.
